Not what we'd hoped to hear...

Well...our doctor's appointment did not go as we had hoped this morning. Our sweet boy's little heart is getting worse, and he is scheduled for surgery on Thursday morning. I am feeling overwhelmed and quite sad at the moment. It's such a scary prospect to know that your 7-week-old baby is going to have major surgery. I hadn't prepared myself for the possibility of things moving so quickly, which is making it all seem so much scarier.

I am clinging to the fact that God is still in control, even when I feel like things are very much out of control. Truett's name means 'small and honest' and I can't help but think of how true both of those meanings are at this point. He seems so small to be facing all of these big things, and he is still so sweetly innocent.

For my entire adult life, I have loved 2 Corinthians 9:8...And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

I am very much relying on God's grace to sustain us in the coming days. My faith is being tested and strengthened in a way unlike anything I've experienced previously. I have always believed in God's sovereignty, but it is a difficult thing to really let go of that which you hold dearest and to surrender it to the Lord in such a tangible way.

Friends, will you please join us in praying for this precious boy? And for the medical team that will be performing surgery on his little heart Thursday morning? And for our family as we walk through these hard days ahead?
Thank you.

  1. He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater. He sendeth more strength when the labors increase. To added affliction, he addeth his mercy; To multiplied trials, his multiplied peace. His love has no limit. His grace has no measure. His power has no boundary known unto men. For out of his infinite riches in Jesus, he giveth and giveth and giveth again. Love you...be there tomorrow. Mom

  2. I love your quilt, what a great job for a first one.
I'm praying for little Truett and his brave family. We have spent many hours in hospital with our little guy and God has always helped us through the tough times. Pick a hymn that gives you faith and sing it over and over in your head to encourage you.

  4. We are praying and praying and wishing we lived closer to just sit beside you and hug you. Praying for strength, courage, and peace that surpasses all understanding. Praying that you find comfort in Joshua 1:9: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Wherever you go...wherever you go, the God of the Universe will be right there with you. We are praising the Lord for that truth.

  5. I do know that God is faithful and hears our cries to him. Life is tough but we have Him to hold on to. His arms will surround you with his grace. He gives us each other so we aren't alone.
"Before any of us were born God planned for us to share our lives with each other. He knew that we would laugh together and cry together. He knew that we would need each other to hug, to help, to teach, to serve, and to love!"

  6. You are in my family's thoughts and prayers, and even though it is not the outcome you wanted, God has a plan and this journey may bring things greater than you can imagine.

  7. God's sovereignty is so comforting yet in times like this His will for our lives can be full of confusion and fear. I'm so sorry your family is going through this, but it humbles me to see your faith and trust in God's control. Matthew Henry says, "We should not pray so much for the removal of affliction, as for wisdom to make a right use of it." You seem to be living this out right now. I'm in awe of your strength and honesty. Thank you for sharing your heartache with us.

  8. Hello. My sister in law works with Truett's Grandpa and asked me to pray for you. Our son had open heart surgery at 2 days, 9 days, 2 months and 5 months old. He is now an active 11 month old, living life to the fullest. We will be praying for you all this Thursday, for peace and strength for your family and for guidance for the medical team.

  11. I am Jodi's cousin. You are on my heart tonight as I read what you are going through. I will keep your family and especially your little boy, Truett in our prayers. We have recently gone through a very hard time with our daughter who was very ill and in ICU for 52 days. He baby boy was taken 6 weeks early b c-section. She and her baby boy are alive and doing well. We are praising and thanking God for all the miracles that He preformed to preserve their lives. Our God is the awesome great physician who can give wisdom to your baby's doctors as they fix the problem. We trust that He will give you all you need as you go through this trial. I pray that you will rest in God's peace that is beyond our understanding. Love,

  15. My twins, now 35 years old, underwent heart surgery as itty bitty little wee bairns. In fact, when they took Erik from me on Valentine's Day 1977, he was all of two months old and they made me sign a paper that said the test was necessary but that there was an 80% chance that he would not survive the test (catheter into the heart through the artery in the inner thigh). They told me to hug him and give him a kiss goodbye. Can you imagine?

Well he is now the father of two lovely grandchildren and he is healthy. So hang on to your hopes. Just imagine this over and how you will handle the next Easter Egg Hunt. Trust. I am with you in your investment in the success of these interventions.

  16. We are praying for your family and will continue to pray for you all in these coming days. I know exactly how you feel as my oldest (now 3) has had two open heart surgeries--the first when he was only 5 lbs and the second at 16 months. Both were at Children's Hospital in Denver and I remember all to well what it was like the days before, the day of surgery and the days after. May the Lord grant you both peace and give you strength. Dr. Mitchell was our son's surgeon both times and we know the other surgeons as well. The quality of care is beyond amazing and I know your sweet baby boy is in good hands. Our Lord is the great physican and I know He will be guiding the surgeon's hands tomorrow. (As a side note, I think I was in the same class at Wheaton as Brett.) May the Lord bless you all. --Valerie Perciante
